Great Americans

Carly with Mayor Russ Wall

singing This Land is Your Land

March 2, 2012- All of the 2nd grade classes have been working on their Great American project for the last month or so. Each child chose a person in history that was considered a great American. They read about and researched the person then wrote a report on what they accomplished in their lives. Then they gathered items to represent this person and made a display. This morning was the presentation. They took their desks into the gym and set up their displays on their desks. A lot of them dressed up as their American and the children's families were invited to come and see them. Carly chose Abigail Adams who was the wife of John Adams, the 2nd president of the United States. She was also known for all the letters she wrote to her husband while he was away at congress trying to settle the unrest during the Revolutionary War. She lived in Boston during the Boston Tea Party and aided soldiers and military men on their way to battle. Her letters were most well known because they now give so much insight into the culture and history around that time period that would otherwise be lost to our knowledge. Carly did a great job on her report, dressed up like Abigail Adams, and sang with her classmates, "This Land is Your Land". At the end of the presentation they brought in some present day Great Americans including military persons, local fire fighters and police officers, Mayor Wall(the mayor of Taylorsville), and the superintendent of Granite school district. We all sang; "Proud to be an American" together and said the pledge of allegiance. It was all very patriotic and I could tell that those kids learned a lot, not only about past Americans but also about how great it is to live in this free country today. I hope Carly is as proud as I am to be an American and I am grateful for the freedoms I have.
